Post 5 - Day 1: Sioux Center to Cherokee

Today's miles: 54.4
Temp: 106 degrees
Heat index: 117 degrees

RAGBRAI is not only made up of 8 host towns, but also all the little communities along the route.  Our first pass-through town was Orange City, a dutch-themed community.

There is so much congestion in each town , that you have to get off your bike and walk.  One of the big attractions of RAGBRAI is all of the food and drink that is offered along the way from vendors, families and individuals.  Some of the food choices include: Mr. Pork Chop sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs and bacon on a stick, breakfast burritos, giant turkey legs, huge ears of corn, watermelon, smoothies, and pies-a-go-go.

Each town has a beer garden - no matter the time of day you pass through.

Everyday the support vehicle can meet up with the riders at a single designated town.  It is usually the half-way point of the day's ride and, according to Kris, the only reason she's still in Iowa.  Soni is kind of fond of those meeting towns too.
