Post 1 - B52s do RAGBRAI 2012

15,000 riders.
471 miles.
7 days.
1 party.

RAGBRAI (The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state of Iowa. Heading into its 40th year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world.

RAGBRAI is limited to 10,000 riders and because entries generally exceed the number of riders allowed, a lottery system is used.  We were thrilled when we found out we got in this year.  [Update: Actual number of riders was over 15,000 this year.]

Our team - the B52s - is made up of six riders:
  • Steve McIntyre
  • Soni Adams
  • Betsy Specketer
  • Elaine Elliott
  • Kris Cappel
  • Sue Boyle
and one support driver:
  • Gwen Hilyard
Our team name stands for Bicyclists over 52.

RAGBRAI is affectionately known as a rolling celebration that attracts riders from all 50 states and many foreign countries.  Each year the RAGBRAI route changes and eight new Iowa towns are selected as nightly host communities.  In addition, riders pass through many other towns along the way, where locals roll out the red carpet and show their hospitality with food, drink, and entertainment.  The RAGBRAI website emphasizes that this is a bicycle ride, not a race.  We think it will be one big party!

We will be chronicling our week-long adventure here on this blog.  We'll also try and include pictures and video when we can.  Feel free to post your comments.

So please join us and follow along.  It should be interesting!
